My favorite motorcycle films—and I’d be hard-pressed to choose between them—are Austin Vince’s first two travelogues, the original Mondo Enduro TV special and the follow-up Terra Circa mini-series (review here). But those works were filmed 20 years ago, or more, and camera technology has come a very long way since then. Action cameras and shrunk-down digital cameras have come a long way, but this isn’t always a good thing. A lot of amateurs are flooding the Internet with cruddy-looking footage shot on equipment that would have been sci-fi not that long ago.
Ben Forman isn’t one of those filmmakers. An industry pro who’s worked in the world of television and video streaming for years as director, writer, and producer, Forman is finally telling his own tale instead of a commercial assignment for a third party. Higher Calling, which is headed for the festival circuit in coming months, is Forman’s story of loss and searching for meaning. And thanks to his camera skills, it looks very good….
